Hive of activity… #MaltaFreeportTerminals joined the global celebration of World Environment Day 2025, embracing this year’s theme: #BeatPlasticPollution. In collaboration with the Birżebbuġa Local Council, our employees came together for a day of impactful environmental action in support of our local community and natural surroundings. One of the most meaningful activities this year was the creation of Bee Houses, a small but powerful way to support nature. These were carefully handcrafted by our employees using natural, untreated wood, ensuring a safe and toxin-free environment for their future inhabitants. Special attention was given to using eco-friendly materials and following best practices to maximise the success of this initiative. The bee houses are designed to attract and support solitary bees, which are non-aggressive and safe around people, making them ideal pollinators. Solitary bees are also incredibly efficient as a single solitary bee can pollinate as many flowers as 100 honeybees, playing a crucial role in supporting biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. By creating safe nesting sites for these vital pollinators, we are not only helping to combat the global decline in bee populations, but also encouraging natural, sustainable pollination in our local environment. This thoughtful initiative reflects our commitment to meaningful, long-term environmental impact.
In addition to this, our team also participated in a clean-up in Birżebbuġa and Birżebbuġa Bay, collecting various types of litter, including a significant number of cigarette butts which are a major source of microplastic pollution often overlooked. This event forms part of Malta Freeport’s ongoing environmental programme, which includes regular clean-up activities throughout the year. One of our most recent clean-up efforts took place at Għar Ħasan, another important natural site in the Birżebbuġa area. We are proud of the dedication, and care that our employees continue to show towards the environment. Indeed, their efforts demonstrate how small actions, when combined, can lead to meaningful change.
