This year’s European Week for Waste Reduction gave us another chance to put circular thinking into practice at #MaltaFreeportTerminals. Instead of letting unused equipment gather dust or slip into the waste stream, we focused on how it could be given a second life in our own community.
One of our main initiatives centred on digital access. In collaboration with the Birżebbuġa Local Council, we restored several desktop computers and passed them on to residents who can now use them for study, work, and day-to-day online needs.
To bring the spirit of the week to life, all participants wore T-shirts featuring the EWWR 2025 theme, Turn on the Value, Switch Off the Waste. It was a simple but powerful way to show our shared commitment to reuse, reduction, and responsible action.
We also continued a project that has become a favourite among our team: crafting bee houses from natural wood. These small structures create safe habitats for solitary bees, vital pollinators that are increasingly under pressure. The new bee houses are now placed in green areas around Birżebbuġa.
Together with our employees, contractors, and the enthusiastic support of Birżebbuġa Primary School, we launched a battery collection campaign. Hundreds of used household batteries were gathered and will now be handed over to Hospice Malta, where they will be safely recycled while also assisting the organisation’s fundraising efforts.
We also found new purpose for materials that would otherwise be discarded. Used wooden pallets were re-engineered into a durable outdoor bench, which was donated to the Birżebbuġa Scout Group to support their activities.
To nurture a love for reading among young learners, our staff donated children’s books and educational resources to Birżebbuġa Primary School, enriching classrooms with new stories and learning material.

Our employees also supported the Association for Abandoned Animals, assisting with daily care and contributing through the Bottle for Food initiative. Plastic bottles collected by our team were exchanged for funds used to buy dog food and essential supplies, showing that everyday waste can be converted into meaningful help.

We brought the week to a close with a community clean-up in the centre of Birżebbuġa. Employees came together to refresh shared public spaces, demonstrating how teamwork and care for our surroundings can create immediate and visible impact. We are proud to keep contributing to a culture of environmental awareness, responsibility, and community support.
