We were delighted to welcome delegates from the Maritime World Conference and Expo – which took place in Malta between November 19 and 21 – who got to experience #MaltaFreeportTerminal’s facilities from the Penthouse terrace and during the tour as well as observed our operations up close inside the Control Room.
Our CEO, Alex Montebello, delivered an insightful presentation at the conference on the Freeport’s ongoing development, highlighting the significant investment made since privatisation in equipment upgrades, infrastructure improvements, digitisation, and the expansion of Terminal 2. He told delegates that the success of Malta’s maritime industry is, in many ways, tied to the success of our port, which has worked tirelessly over the past three decades to become one of the leading transshipment hubs in the Mediterranean. “Today, we connect with more than 110 ports across the globe, serving as a key gateway for international trade. Our strength, however, lies not only in our strategic location but in our consistent commitment to investment, innovation, operational excellence, and sustainability.”
The Maritime World Conference and Expo brings together international leaders, regulators, industry experts, and key stakeholders to explore the future of the global maritime sector. It serves as a valuable platform for collaboration, fresh perspectives, and meaningful discussions on the challenges and opportunities shaping the industry. Maritime World is a dynamic international organisation that champions progress within the maritime sector. Its commitment to inclusivity and knowledge sharing has built a community where diverse viewpoints help steer the industry forward. This year’s programme placed a strong spotlight on key themes such as decarbonisation, digitalisation, maritime security, workforce development, and the evolution of port infrastructure to support more resilient and efficient supply chains. The participation of senior representatives from the International Maritime Organisation, government ministries, major logistics operators, ship registries, research institutions, and industry associations underscores the strategic importance of this gathering – while Malta’s Prime Minister, Robert Abela, also addressed the conference via video.
Malta’s role as host reinforces its position as a key maritime hub in the Mediterranean, supported by its strategic location, strong regulatory framework, leading ship registry, and well-established transhipment capabilities.
