Marking the 100th EMC Meeting

Meeting of the century… The Environmental Monitoring Committee (EMC) – made up of representatives from ERA, Malta Freeport Corporation, Malta Freeport Terminals Ltd, the Birżebbuga Local Council, NGOs and Transport Malta – held its 100th meeting at the Freeport Centre. The EMC, set up in 2012 with the aim of monitoring the progress made by Freeport on environmental issues, has been a vital forum for ensuring effective communication between the facility and stakeholders on environmental matters. During the sessions, the Freeport typically provides updates on improvement actions, reports on environmental complaints and shares improvement plans. Members were also given a tour of #MaltaFreeportTerminals’ new state-of-the-art fuel station, which meets the latest environmental standards as well as being twice the size of the previous facility with a capacity of 120,000 litres. Building the new fuel station required substantial investment. Phase one involved installing a wash bay and six refuelling facilities while phase two will include a heavy-vehicle washing facility. The EMC Members also had the opportunity to view operations at both container terminals before being hosted at a reception.
