Engineers in the making #MaltaFreeportTerminals was delighted to welcome students from St Clare College National Sports School and Żokrija Secondary School, Maria Regina College for an engaging visit as part of the Career Orientation Visits within the Engineering programme.
Organised by the Career Guidance Section within the Wellbeing Services Directorate of the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation, these visits take place in Year 9, a formative stage when students begin exploring their interests and reflecting on future career paths. The initiative offers structured, age-appropriate exposure to the workplace, enabling students to connect classroom learning with real-world applications while strengthening collaboration between schools and industry.
During their visit, students attended an informative presentation delivered by Engineer Ivan Curmi, Engineering Manager, who shared valuable insights into the operations and mechanical engineering systems that drive the Freeport’s activities and support its role as a key transhipment hub in the Mediterranean.
The experience continued with a guided tour of the container terminals, where students observed container handling equipment and containership operations from a safe vantage point. Seeing the scale, precision, and coordination required in a fast-paced port environment helped bring engineering concepts to life in a tangible and memorable way.
Another highlight of the visit was the opportunity to experience the advanced crane simulator, which replicates quay and yard crane operations through realistic visual, sound, and motion feedback. This immersive technology demonstrated how innovation and training go hand in hand in modern engineering and port operations.
Such visits provide meaningful exposure to the world of work, inspiring students to explore future pathways while helping them make informed decisions about their studies and careers.
